Kyle Jacob Roger
January 17, 2001 - February 7, 2009

Kyle passed away peacefully at home surrounded and loved by his family.

Waterbugs and Dragonflies

Down below the surface of a quiet pond lived a little colony of water bugs. They were a happy colony, living far away from the sun. For many months they were very busy, scurrying over the soft mud on the bottom of the pond. They did notice that every once in awhile one of their colony seemed to lose interest in going about. Clinging to the stem of a pond lily it gradually moved out of sight and was seen no more.
"Look!" said one of the water bugs to another. "One of our colony is climbing up the lily stalk. Where do you think she is going?" Up, up, up it slowly went....Even as they watched, the water bug disappeared from sight. Its friends waited and waited but it didn't return...

"That's funny!" said one water bug to another. "Wasn't she happy here?" asked a second... "Where do you suppose she went?" wondered a third.
No one had an answer. They were greatly puzzled. Finally one of the water bugs, a leader in the colony, gathered its friends together. "I have an idea". The next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk must promise to come back and tell us where he or she went and why." "We promise", they said solemnly.

One spring day, not long after, the very water bug who had suggested the plan found himself climbing up the lily stalk. Up, up, up, he went. Before he knew what was happening, he had broke through the surface of the water and fallen onto the broad, green lily pad above.

When he awoke, he looked about with surprise. He couldn't believe what he saw. A startling change had come to his old body. His movement revealed four silver wings and a long tail. Even as he struggled, he felt an impulse to move his wings...The warmth of the sun soon dried the moisture from the new body. He moved his wings again and suddenly found himself up above the water. He had become a dragonfly!!

Swooping and dipping in great curves, he flew through the air. He felt exhilarated in the new atmosphere. By and by the new dragonfly lighted happily on a lily pad to rest. Then it was that he chanced to look below to the bottom of the pond. Why, he was right above his old friends, the water bugs! There they were scurrying around, just as he had been doing some time before.

The dragonfly remembered the promise: "The next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk will come back and tell where he or she went and why." Without thinking, the dragonfly darted down. Suddenly he hit the surface of the water and bounced away. Now that he was a dragonfly, he could no longer go into the water...

"I can't return!" he said in dismay. "At least, I tried. But I can't keep my promise. Even if I could go back, not one of the water bugs would know me in my new body. I guess I'll just have to wait until they become dragonflies too. Then they'll understand what has happened to me, and where I went."

And the dragonfly winged off happily into its wonderful new world of sun and air.......

jocelyn,

in the past two years, you have shown us faith, optimism, and devotion so gracefully with kyle... always with an open heart and being a teacher you dont just teach us educational fundamentals but have taught your students life lessons... those that we carry with us past high school walls and kyle is a direct representation of the way you teach your students how to approach life. through struggle and victory, to always have faith and love. you have so much to be proud of... for yourself, kyle and nicholas. you have been just as influential to others as kyle has been to others and i hope you realize it. you have made a big difference in other peoples lives and i celebrate that as well as kyle's luminous spirit.

with my greatest respects and love,

As my step brother I'll miss him forever. But he is with my puppy who passed away at 9 months on the tuesday of last week of January. He has someone to look after him and for him to look after in heaven. And each day I'll think about all the pokemon cards that we traded and will cherrish them always, as well as the pokemon pictures that I drew him before his death. My dad only told him about them. I never got to give them to him. I've lost the one who helped me plot against his brother and my siter. But in spirit he will always be my best friend and my partner.

I love you always Kylie,

We met Kyle officially this year thru my son Willie who made a proud new friend Kyle. We are so lucky to have met Kyle and his family. Kyle is a wonder. He taught us all how to find joy, delight and humor in life despite your circumstances. Kyle was a wise soul. Kyle was a gift. He adapted to his situation with amazing grace. As have his family.

I will never forget the afternoon we came to visit and he wanted to let us know he knew 8th grade math and posed some Algebra questions to both his teacher and Willie...this was all done on the white board pointing to letters...numbers and using his own sign language. He next proceeded to tell us that his class should have a fieldtrip to his house...PARTY...he clearly let that be known.

Proud, determined and climbing.

Thank you for sharing Kyle with us.

I never come to tears, and hopefully no one else I know in our honors chemistry class reads this =p.. but Im startin to dehydrate myself..probably should stop now.
Honestly class hasn't ever really been the same without Mr. Roger, everyday that thought would always be in the back of each of our minds, wondering when he'll come back. More troubling than his lengthy absence though was his reason.
The strength both of you have is unlike anything I will ever see, and has set an example of myself of what strength really is. But besides making excuses to not workout anymore,I truly and sincerely wish the best for you and Mr. Roger in the future, which undoubtedly will hold great treasures as you've discovered before.
Keep that head high, your smile vibrant and glowing, and never forget, that even though the days seem rainy, short, and dark now... that down the road, all there is to look forward to is sunshine, brightness, and prosperity..

Best of Wishes,

Thank you for teaching our community to be in the moment, to be present for the ones we love, to never stop hoping, dreaming, loving, caring... to see the joy and the blessings despite the pain and the sorrow. The Brave Little Soul
By: John Alessi

Not too long ago in Heaven there was a little soul who took wonder in observing the world. She especially enjoyed the love she saw there and often expressed this joy with God. One day however the little soul was sad, for on this day she saw suffering in the world. She approached God and sadly asked, “Why do bad things happen; why is there suffering in the world?” God paused for a moment and replied, "Little soul, do not be sad, for the suffering you see, unlocks the love in people’s hearts.” The little soul was confused. “What do you mean,” she asked.” God replied, “Have you not noticed the goodness and love that is the offspring of that suffering? Look at how people come together, drop their differences and show their love and compassion for those who suffer. All their other motivations disappear and they become motivated by love alone.” The little soul began to understand and listened attentively as God continued, “The suffering soul unlocks the love in people’s hearts much like the sun and the rain unlock the flower within the seed. I created everyone with endless love in their heart, but unfortunately most people keep it locked up and hardly share it with anyone. They are afraid to let their love shine freely, because they are afraid of being hurt. But a suffering soul unlocks that love. I tell you this - it is the greatest miracle of all. Many souls have bravely chosen to go into the world and suffer - to unlock this love – to create this miracle - for the good of all humanity."

Just then the little soul got a wonderful idea and could hardly contain herself. With her wings fluttering, bouncing up and down, the little soul excitedly replied, "I am brave; let me go! I would like to go into the world and suffer so that I can unlock the goodness and love in people’s hearts! I want to create that miracle!" God smiled and said, "You are a brave soul I know, and thus I will grant your request. But even though you are very brave you will not be able to do this alone. I have known since the beginning of time that you would ask for this and so I have carefully selected many souls to care for you on your journey. Those souls will help you create your miracle; however they will also share in your suffering. Two of these souls are most special and will care for you, help you and suffer along with you, far beyond the others. They have already chosen a name for you. God and the brave little soul shared a smile, and then embraced.

In parting, God said, “Do not forget little soul that I will be with you always. Although you have agreed to bear the pain, you will do so through my strength. And if the time should come when you feel that you have suffered enough, just say the word, think the thought, and you will be healed.” Thus at that moment the brave little soul was born into the world, and through her suffering and God’s strength, she unlocked the goodness and love in people’s hearts. For so many people dropped their differences and came together to show their love. Priorities became properly aligned. People gave from their hearts. Those that were always too busy found time. Many began new spiritual journeys – some regained lost faith – many came back to God. Parents hugged their children tighter. Friends and family grew closer. Old friends got together and new friendships were made. Distant family reunited, and every family spent more time together. Everyone prayed. Peace and love reigned. Lives changed forever. It was good. The world was a better place. The miracle had happened. God was pleased.

I will be thinking of your family in days to come. If you would like to talk, cry or scream please call I am here anytime. 321-698-8538

Christine

Christin and Jocelyn,
Last night, Joe and I were coming home from dinner. We were talking about all of you and about Kyle, and Joe said, "The sad thing is that this can happen and people can just go on without there lives having changed." And then we had one of those marital moments that are really better for the car than the restaurant. I shot back (which I feel slightly bad for, because I think he was trying to be supportive), "This isn't that kind of situation!" I then went on and on for minutes about the profound impact that Kyle and his journey have had on every single person that his life has touched. No one has gone unchanged, painfully changed, but in large part, we are all profoundly better people for having known each of you.

I think it's really profound that Tiffany saw an eagle take flight and thought of Kyle. I had the same experience. I was coming home from Dream Dinners at about 11:00am and I'd just heard about Kyle. As I turned toward my house, I watched this incredibly strong, beautiful bird take off in front of me and soar toward the sky. I had this incredible sense of ease in knowing that Kyle now has the opportunity to soar again.

Love each other, be well, and please don't hesitate to ask for anything you need.

Words cannot express the sadness we feel over your loss. Kyle was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will live on in our hearts forever. Every day for the past two years you have had to find strength to face each new challenge. Over these next months you will continue to find strength that you still do not even know you have, as I am afraid the darkest days are yet to come. Now you are wondering how you are going to get through the rest of your lives without precious Kyle. It seems an impossible feat. The hole that appeared in your hearts yesterday at 10:30 will always be there. But, it will not always be filled with darkness. Gradually, it will be filled with light; light from the memories that you hold so dear and the gratefulness for time spent together. Your lives were changed forever the day Kyle was born and they were changed again yesterday. You will never be the same again. But, you will not always be sad. You will be able to laugh again. Some days you will take two steps forward and the next day ten steps back. But, eventually, you will only go forward. Take it one step and one day at a time. You will survive. I know these things to be true because 24 years ago I walked in the shoes that you are walking in now. You are in my prayers.

Our neighborhood came alive when Jocelyn and the boys moved next door. We would smile at the sound of the voices and laughter of two little boys. There is no greater sound. When we think of Kyle, we remember his raspy little voice and his energy that was such a life force. He taught us that strength and courage could come in a small package. You have reminded us all of the power of the love of a family.

You are in our thoughts,

To Christin, Jocelyn and Nicolas...
No one knows better than you three what a special, amazing person Kyle was... I've never known anyone else with the ability to make people fall in love with him so quickly.
I am so glad I got to spend those last three years babysitting for Kyle and Nicolas. Hanging out with the boys never really seemed like a job, it always felt more like I was getting paid to play. When I first began babysitting Nicolas was 6 and Kyle was 4. Being the older brother, Nicolas had a few more playdates and school commitments, so it was often just Kyle and me hanging out. From the very beginning it was like spending time with a little adult. We'd play yahtzee and checkers and monopoly and Kyle could always add, subtract and calculate mortgages... he had the uncanny ability to always win too :)Of course, whenever I'd have forgotten that I was with a fun silly little boy he would remind me. I'll never forget telling him a story about going on vacation with my parents and his response was "ok... but how big are their butts?" Kyle always kept me laughing, he was able to make everyone around him happy.
I hope that you can take comfort in the positive impact Kyle had on so many, he was a blessing to everyone.
Love and prayers to you,
Eve

I am so, so sorry for your loss and will keep your family in my thoughts & prayers. I first met Kyle through the Lucky Dawg program with Husky Football and Make A Wish a couple seasons ago. I then saw Kyle the next season and he came up all by himself to tap me on the leg and say hi. We've had many Lucky Dawgs, but Kyle will always be my favorite.

I am so sad to learn Kyle passed. I've followed your story since it was in the paper because I find it so heartbreaking for children to go thru illness when they've barely been here. I was so inspired by your posts and how your family has handled this. I think Kyle was a very lucky boy and while his time here was short, he knew he was loved. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with Kyle's family during this difficult period. My 8 year old son Matthew was "Lifted Up" in March 2007 also from a DIPG. I know that Matthew and all of the other wonderful children were there to meet Kyle upon his arrivial into heaven.

I love the Dragonfly story you posted. Matthew's big sister (then 11 years old) read this story at his funeral. It is a story that brings us a lot of peace. We have seen many dragonflies since Matthew's passing and are sure that is his way to communicate with us his is ok and he misses us as much as we miss him.

Please know I hope the love and memories you have for Kyle will help you during this difficult time.

Thank you so much for sharing Kyle's journey with us. I will keep you in my prayers everyday, I will never forget Kyle and his family.

My heart is aching for your loss, raw and weak at the moment. Kyle was such an astounding child and his soul is even more now!His life was rich with royalty and goodness, the love he gave so freely will be everlasting in my heart and mind. He was fair, kind, patient and understanding of those who were not as able as him, but yet he remained those things, his true self, during the time that he was slowed down in these last days. He will be missed immensely, each and every day, we will feel blessed to have been a small part of his life here in this world.

Praying for every single one of you, we love you all!

I am so blessed to have gotten to know Kyle just a little bit when he attended Happy Valley. It was always great to have him come in to visit us in the office as he always had such a wonderful attitude and contageous smile on his face. I will never forget him.

I came across the words of a song that I thought might ease your pain and sorrow that I know you are feeling right now.

'If you Could See Me Now' - Words and Music by Kim Noblitt

Our prayers have all been answered, I finally arrived; the healing that had been delayed has now been realized.
No one's in a hurry, there's no schedule to keep; we're all enjoying Jesus, just sitting at His feet.
If you could see me now, I'm walking streets of gold. If you could see me now, I'm standing tall and whole. If you could see me now, you'd know I've seen His face. If you could see me now, you'd know the pain's erased.
You wouldn't want me to ever leave this pefect place if you could only see me now.

I hope this helps just a little bit.
My prayers and thoughts will continue to be with you and your family,
Michele Davis, Happy Valley Secretary

I wanted to share this story with you because it has made me see how your son has touch the lives of my children and many others around him....We heard about Kyle this weekend while participating in a basketball tournament in Ferndale. It filled our hearts that we wanted to do something to honor him. My son, Tanner a 6th grader at Fairhaven, asked me to take him to get black bands for his team to wear in their next basketball game. We went to Prostock and did just that. He shared with the team who Kyle was. Many of the boys knew Kyle as they attended Happy Valley with him so they were all onbaord to wear the black bands as well as dedicate the game to him. They ended up beating Ferndale, a team they battle against everytime, with 13 seconds left on the clock, the score tied, the ball was in Tanners hands... he drove to the hope on the final play and scored the winning bucket!!! That night 3 or 4 of the boys slept with their armbands on and wore them again the next day!!! My son as well as some of the other boys have decided to they will continue to honor Kyle by wearing the armbands and have dedicated the rest of their season to him!!

I feel honored to have been able to coach Kyle in basketball and for me to have my son desire to honor him on a basketball court, where my children and I first came to find out about Kyles condition, was a perfect way to tell Kyle we loved him and that he will always be with us!

God Bless Yor Family!

Hi. I came upon this blog by chance... please accept my sympathies for your loss.

I am 30 now, but when I was only 6 one of my classmates died of a brain aneurysm. I had a pencil box that he liked very much, and I still have it with me to this day. It's sitting on my bedside table, in fact. I'll never get rid of it because it reminds me of my friend. He was such a kind, happy little boy and I always want to remember him.

Kyle's friends will remember him. I promise they won't forget just like I've never forgotten my old friend Bryan.

Your family is in my thoughts, and I'll keep your darling Kyle in my pencil box of memories.

To Kyle's Family-

What a strong little guy, who taught our kids so many things. I remember when as 3rd grades my son and some of his friends decided to do the Sea to Ski Jr. race and race for Kyle. They had the shirts and everything, they didn't win but the spirit and determination they had to try for him was wonderful. Amazing how kids can bring out the best in all of us, young or old. That's what Kyle did. Andrew said that the saddest thing would be not seeing Kyle at school anymore. That's so true what an inspiration he was and you as his family were.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I know that he is with Jesus and is going to be such an awesome angel!!!!

This little piece is one I love. It is titled YES and is by Judy Brown.

The pain of endings,
real, anticipated,
swamps the living
that is possible
before the end.

The joy and grief
are all about a
single thing:
what matters most.

If I deny them,
either one,
I am denying life.

And so to
both of them,
the joy and grief,
I say a silent
"YES."

Thank you for teaching us to remember what matters most!

To you all,
I hope that you may know how truly renewing it was for me to know Kyle. His short time in my life has forever changed me. You all have brought so much insight to those around you... may we take from your experiences and learn how important each moment of our lives truly is. I felt lifted this Sunday when I was battling my sickness, and trying to make it up to the 24th annual Banked Slalom at Baker... the sun was shining, there was a recent snow on the ground, and everywhere I was, I felt Kyle there with me. Perhaps the elevation makes me feel closer to heaven than ever before- or maybe because he is with me. He is with all of us where ever we want to take him. That day was Dylan's real first day at Baker on a snowboard and boy he amazed me. He soared down the hill at least 50 feet his first run on the rope tow. I enjoyed watching his child like faith in action. His sense of being totally protected and comfortable in a completely new environment was astonishing to me. It made me wonder if perhaps he felt Kyle's presence there too. Children are like snowflakes each one beautiful and unique. I will take Kyle everywhere I go- without knowing him I would be a different person entirely. Love you guys!!

I think God has a purpose for us all and for Kyle, maybe it was to teach us all about the gift of life. What he has taught everyone he has touched is immeasurable. The way he grabbed onto life and made every moment count, and no matter how hard life got, he could always find the good in it and persevere. Kyle's beautiful, dynamic and colorful soul is still shining brightly and always will.

I remember when Melissa decided to do a benefit concert for Kyle for her Senior Project....... peace to you and your family.

Christin, Jocelyn, and Nicolas,

We have all been blessed and touch by Kyle's life, and the way your family has allowed everyone to be a part of it. Your strength is amazing, and we cannot express our sympathy for the loss of Kyle. We are thinking and praying for you all.

The funeral today was amazing. Christin, you did such a great job organizing it and the entire thing typified Kylie's fun and infectiously happy spirit. I know he would have been very happy to hear the music, see the great collections and eat the junk food. It was a fitting send-off to a very special little boy.

What a beautiful story to illustrate Kyle's story. Thank you for sharing his story. I pray for peace that is beyond your expectations.

Dear Roger family,

No one who met Kyle went untouched. He had the ability to Brighten your day just by smiling at you. Everyday day when I saw him at school, he had the biggest smile on his face! It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Kylie was a brave, strong, smart, and powerful boy. His positive outlook on life inspired us all to be thankful for every day God gives us.

His legacy lives on all over the world. It is proven by all of the comments on this fabulous blog how loved Kylie was and how many lives he touched.
The increadable amount of support from your whole family was outstanding. Your courage, support, and bravery was truly inspiring. Kylie lived everyday to the fullest, leaving behind no regrets.

Kyle, you and your family are always in my thoughts and I hope you all stay strong during this emotional part of the year<3

Much love,
